[researcher][00:01] Hi, how are you?

[participant][00:03] I'm fine. Thank you. How are you?

[researcher][00:05] I'm good. I'm good. So today we're actually meeting to do the interview following your two week participation in our study on Instagram use and mobile banking app. Thank you for completing the log book entries. And today we'll talk through some questions, reflections and feeling about your experience. Just a quick reminder that this interview is being recorded as outlined in the consent form, and if you have any concerns about that, please let us know. And of course, you're free to skip any questions at any time if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

[researcher][00:35] So to begin with, could you tell me about your main hobbies or activities you enjoy in your free time?

[participant][00:43] So I'm actually a professional water polo player, like except, like, school, I only do that. I have like, three to four trainings per week, and I also most of the time on Saturday nights, I have a game. And besides that, I also do gym by myself in the mornings. So like, sports is, like, probably the main hobby I have.

[researcher][01:09] And in what ways, if any, does your mobile app use, including Instagram and your banking app support or interfere with these hobbies?

[participant][01:17] So while doing the sport, I don't use them like normally, but the transportation like the transportation part that comes in. I think Instagram, I open the app while going to do trainings, either with public transportation or with the car, like when my teammates take me. So when I get bored in the car, because sometimes they just speak in French and I don't understand. I use my Instagram because I was bored, so I think it doesn't support or interfere, but it's like, helps me with the transportation.

[researcher][01:54] Okay, I see. And I have one more question regarding this, the hobbies, do you think that you can, like, use Instagram for your for the content to help you, like, improve your trainings and everything, or just like, just like for the like to avoid, to distract yourself?

[participant][02:19] So with Instagram, like, I'm, I was never a, like, big Instagram user for all of my life. I, like, I never posted things, and I don't like posting stuff, but like for games or like results, like, real, like, either when I was back in Turkey or here, like, they always post post game stuff on their Instagram pages. Or like when I was in national team. So it was also the case, like there was always stuff with, like, post game stuff, like those stuff. But I was never into it, so I didn't do it myself. But it was a thing with the team always.

[researcher][02:56] Okay, I see. So before starting the two week log book, how would you describe your typical interaction with Instagram and your mobile banking app?

[participant][03:07] So I think with my mobile banking app, it was most of the time during the days, like when we I go my friends to the restaurant to pay something, because, like most of times, I pay something and they pay me back, or they pay for my food and I pay them back. So that was the thing that I use my banking app most of the time. Or I just checking out my balance because I was curious, and it's my Instagram it's either transportation during the day or at night when I'm just bored at my house as just scrolling down or reading some stories.

[researcher][03:45] And have you ever set a screen time limit or similar controls on your phone to manage the use of either apps?

[participant][03:53] No, I have never used the screen time in my life.

[researcher][03:56] Okay, as you completed the logbook logbook entries over the two weeks, did you begin to notice any emerging patterns in when or how you used each app?

[participant][04:05] Yes, like, I think for Instagram with time, it's most of time it's at night that I use Instagram. Like, if I'm like, using over ten minutes, it's because I was on bored at the house and there's nothing to do. And with my banking app, it's like most of the time when I'm outside the house paying something or, like, eating something.

[researcher][04:28] Perfect, so and across the two week period, what typically prompted you to open Instagram and what prompted you again to open the banking app?

[participant][04:41] Yeah, for Instagram, it was like boredom, like I already told you, with my banking app, it's like two things, like either the transaction of the money either like paying a bill or paying getting money, receiving money from my friends, or like paying my friends back. And with Instagram, yeah, it's just boredom and like, I don't use the Instagram that much.

[researcher][05:05] So, okay, did you ever find yourself switching directly from one of those app to the other? If so, what did you think triggered that transition?

[participant][05:19] I normally don't switch from one app to another app, because it's just different things for me. I don't like consider them, like together, but I remember only one time doing it, I think when there was an advertisement on Instagram of a concert in Brussels, like it was a Turkish group concert, but I looked at the price that was too high, like I didn't want to pay that much. So I think that was one time, but I used my banking app right after Instagram and the other way around, I don't think I would do it.

[researcher][05:56] Were there particular times of day when you noticed you were more or less likely to use either app?

[participant][06:03] So I think with Instagram, I don't think I used Instagram while I was outside with my friends or I was when I was in school. Don't think. The only time I used Instagram was either transportation or at my home at night when I'm bored, and with banking app, it's vice versa. I think most of times that I use my banking app, I was outside during the day with my friends, either paying something or like getting paid. With my friend because I paid for their food. So I think those of the pattern, those are the patterns that I can tell.

[researcher][06:40] Did you notice any emotional changes before, during or after either app use, if yes, can you describe any specific examples where this was especially noticeable?

[participant][06:50] So with emotional changes, I think with banking app for the last two days of my recording period, when every time I open my banking app. I feel felt stressed because I, like, I used a lot of money in the last few days. So that was the thing. In last two days, it was stressing me every time I opened and saw my balance. And with Instagram its like it was either I was getting bored then I opened Instagram, got entertained somehow and felt better. Or it was I opened Instagram because I was bored. I couldn't find anything, then I was still bored. And sometimes, if I use Instagram, like more than ten or fifteen minutes, I felt guilty about it, because it's not a good thing to use, like, it's meaningless for me. I think that way. So those are the emotions that I can talk about. I think right now.

[researcher][07:49] Perfect, and for the actual recorded amount of time you spent on Instagram, it was forty-five minutes. And for the banking app, it was twenty-five. How do you feel about this?

[participant][08:01] Yeah, it was like thirty-five to twenty-five I think.

[researcher][08:09] Yeah, it's thirty-five for Instagram and twenty-five for banking app.

[participant][08:14] So I what I guessed before, was about thirty minutes on Instagram. So like, twenty-five like, or less than, I guess, like twenty, minutes for Instagram, I think it was like over what I expected. Maybe it's like the night that I was bored and scrolling down affected this. I do think, like, it's a waste of time, like, waste of thirty minutes per day. It's a long time, and I should like lower or like delete the app because I don't even like it. And with banking app, it's also like around what I expected. But I think I should lower it also because I keep checking the banking app without any reason. So I think both of the apps, like my usage of them was higher than what I expected.

[researcher][09:08] And knowing your actual usage, do you think participating in this study has influenced how you might use these apps in the future?

[participant][09:14] Yeah, definitely. I think they will. The numbers, the minutes will get lower in the future.

[researcher][09:22] Perfect, and last question, is there anything else you observed during the study that has not been covered in these questions but feels relevant to the research topic?

[participant][09:33] No, I think it's covered at all. Thank you very much for the interview.

[researcher][09:38] Thank you for your time. Have a nice day.

[participant][09:39] You too.
